Cooler weather, covered skin and less time in the sun make Fall a perfect time to schedule lasers and chemical peels. Fall is also a great time to switch up a few skincare products.

Here are a few Fall favorites to revive and prepare summer skin for the cooler, drier weather ahead:

Pixel Laser Resurfacing

Undo the damage from time in the sun and years on the planet with a series of Pixel Laser Resurfacing treatments. This fractionated erbium laser procedure vaporizes microscopic tunnels in the skin and heats the underlying layers to trigger growth of new collagen fibers. These scattered tunnels cover about 30% of the skin surface, so a series of 4 to 5 is recommended.

Because each microscopic wound is surrounded by untreated tissue, skin heals very quickly.

Usually a day post-procedure, affected areas darken, revealing a speckled grid pattern on the skin. These darkened areas generally flake off within five to seven days, revealing brighter, smoother, healthier skin.

Pixel Laser and Secret RF procedures may be combined or alternated for deeper wrinkles and scars. Pixel Laser is appropriate for all skin types.

Chemical Peels

Quickly unearth the healthy skin buried underneath all the dead skin cells accumulated from summer sun exposure. Go even deeper with peels during these cooler months. Deeper peels and body peels are made for the shade.

If you haven’t considered a series of body peels, you’re kind of missing out. Picture tighter, brighter, smoother legs, arms, chest and back. Yes, you should schedule as soon as possible.

Fall/Winter is also the best time to get really serious about controlling melasma. Since this skin issue is mostly product and peel dependent, now is the time to tackle the situation with a series of pigment targeting chemical peels.

Excel V and IPL

Spot and broken capillary erasers are great treatments for Fall. Age spots and broken capillaries are shrieking giveaways to accelerated aging and a bit of negligence in the skincare department. Excel V and IPL will help destroy this evidence.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Neither IPL nor Excel V is appropriate for the hormonally induced and light triggering hyperpigmentation skin issue called melasma. However, both are excellent treatments to calm any facial redness and erase broken capillaries. Rosacea, PIE (post-inflammatory erythema), inflamed acne, and pesky vascular issues cannot survive regular sessions of these treatments.

IPL is an intense pulsed light device often mis-categorized with lasers. Because the pulsed light is absorbed by pigment, it is not an appropriate treatment for darker skin types.

A series of 3-5 treatments, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, is recommended to clear most pigment and vascular issues. Yearly touch-up sessions of 1-2 treatments are recommended for maintenance of results. Strict compliance with sun protection and recommended products also is required to maintain results.

Excel V laser is appropriate for all skin types. High powered green laser energy is absorbed by damaged vessels and capillaries, causing them to collapse, seal shut, erasing them from visibility. This energy also targets and shatters pigmented lesions. Just like IPL, pigmented lesions will darken and lift, falling off in about a week.

Laser Hair Removal

Because not shaving ever again is so very satisfying. Also, you can’t have laser hair removal when your skin is inflamed and tanned.

Skincare

A good rule is to change up your skincare routine when the weather changes. Cooler temps and less humidity can disrupt skin’s protective barrier.

The function of skin and its protective barrier is to protect our bodies from the onslaught of environmental assaults (pollution, chemicals, bacteria, viruses, diseases), to help maintain skin pH and water balance in our bodies, and to regulate body temperature. When skin’s protective barrier is disrupted, chances of increased sensitivity, dryness, irritation, inflammation and aging accelerate.

Keeping skin healthy and resilient with the change of seasons is important for our overall health and appearance. We aren’t just talking about our faces! It is important to take care of eyes, lips and everything south of our necks too.
